Are You Sure that You're Really an Otaku? - Page 2 Empty Are You Sure that You're Really an Otaku?

First topic message reminder :

Well, all of us here are fans of anime. Who does not like anime here anyway? No one. But have you ever asked yourself if you're really SO OBSESSED in anime? Do you consider yourself as an Otaku or are you the type of person that belongs to Weeaboos?

What is an Otaku? What is a Weeaboo? What are their differences? Are You Sure that You're Really an Otaku? - Page 2 7776-30

Otaku is...
a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly (but not limited to) anime and manga. The term otaku is most often equivalent to a "geek". However, it can relate to a fan of any particular theme, topic, hobby or any form of entertainment. The term otaku can be applied to both males and females. People who are referred to as otaku are judged for their behaviors and people suddenly see an otaku as a person unable to relate to reality. In Japan there has been some negativity towards otaku and its culture.
based from Wikipedia

Weeaboo (a.k.a Wapanese) is...
an English slang used to describe a person (typically of non-Japanese descent) who prefers Japan and all things in Japanese over one’s indigenous culture. The term is a successive mutation of “Wapanese,” a derogatory slur referring to western Japanophiles with a strong bias towards Japanese cultural and tech imports. Originally, it is an antecedent word “Wapanese” (as in Wannabe Japanese) and a 4chan term which devised from the word-filter, replacing every instance of Wapanese. Weeaboo was a fictitious term originally coined by Nicholas Gurewitch in his Perry Bible Fellowship comic strip.

Difference betweeen an Otaku and a Weeaboo
Establishing distinctions between Otaku and Weeaboo can be kinda confusing, as both subcultures subscribe to a common set of interests (ex: anime/manga/gaming/cosplay) and share the social stigma of nurturing "unhealthy hobbyisms."

So there you have it. You know now what an otaku and a weeaboo is. Features of weeaboo overlaps those of an otaku or at least, the popular interpretation for otaku. The reason why is simple: every weeaboo is an otaku, BUT not every otaku is a Weeaboo. Mind blown yet? Well, it’s not exactly easy to tell them apart. :P

Are you an Otaku or a Weeaboo?

That's stupid.

The reason I got into anime is because it's free. I can torrent it.

I'd never buy DVDs , figurines, posters, and manga. It's expensive.

If I have the money, I'd go for a better hobby than anime. Like Heroin.

I know that each of us have our own ways of helping the industry but please do not insult the others who support the industry directly.

I agree though that buying anime goods doesn't mean that you are a greater Otaku/anime lover/whatever you want to call yourself compared to the others.

You should just support the industry any way you can but please respect others who are supporting the same industry but through different methods.

Thank you for that wonderful statement

I'm not an otaku, because I don't obsess over anime/manga. I'm just a regular fan. Not a weeb either because I don't go around glomping people screaming "kawaii desu!" or saying Japan is wonderland... So yeah I'm neither.

And what's wrong with purchasing the anime DvDs and manga? It's a preferable way of expressing your fandom tbh. I'd rather buy the manga and DVDs of the series I like than keep pirated copies. You have to remember piracy is still illegal and the only real way to help the anime industry is to buy their stuff. I mean, you can sugarcoat your torrenting and downloading excuses all you want, but the truth is still there. Torrenting/downloading won't make you any less of a fan, but if I compared someone who has an original collection to one with a downloaded collection, I'd admire the former a lot more for his dedication.

He added a smiley and looks like he is happy that he did it. This guy has also posted around the forums declaring he has anime dvds. So I can say he's proud of it. Whatever makes him entertained and happy. I guess you'll understand when you find something you love and is willing to spend on it and support it. It can be anything like your overpriced coffee from starbucks or an exessive gift for you r mother or girlfriend or some hobby you pick up. I just hope when you do find it you don't find yourself stupid but instead happy and you can easily tell yourself "Damn... that was worth every penny."

Time to eat that grenade I guess.

I can see the first two criteria of a weaboo in me (since i spend most of my time in front of the T.V. / monitor watching because of this I already get accustomed to them)
then the rest of the criteria in the otaku part I got all of them not much of a perv though I think ....

Well I don't buy anime dvds but I do buy LiSA concert dvds and original albums that you can also download in the internet. The bottom line why I do this is because I have money to spare and I want to support LiSA. The sad truth is if LiSA doesn't make much money she won't be able to sing anymore. If everybody does the practical thing and just download everything then no more LiSA. Since I have money to spare, I love her music, I want to support her in anyway I can so I buy the dvds and albums.

The same I guess goes for anime. Nowadays dvd and blueray ranking are more and more becoming the basis of how successful an anime is. It's the reason why k-on had a season 2 even if its just a moeblob anime, why all of bakemonogatari's novels have been scheduled for an adaptation, why there are 3 new madoka movies. They all broke blueray records when they came out. It is also the reason why no matter how much I like Kami-sama dolls, it won't be getting a season 2 anytime soon (yes it sold really low).

So maybe you don't have money to spare or want to be more practical when it comes to money, well thats fine. As I said you can support what you love in anyway you can by blogging, promoting, facebook etc. It doesn't change the fact that you liked watching anime. Maybe you can encourage more people to support anime. Just do what you can for what you love.

I would not consider myself to belong in any of those categories I simply love to watch anime, read mangas, and little by little collect some stuffs related to anime but I'm not an otaku yet X). In my opinion the title "Otaku" belong to those people who are hardcore fanatics of anime and all those things that are related to it and I'm not on that stage as of now ^_^.

I find fans who buy their stuff more admirable than those who don't tbh. You may be able to get anime for free but that doesn't change the fact that it's piracy.

Oh please, its not like you bought every anime you watched on a DVD. Or streamed it online. It's not like you never downloaded a single app , mp3 music, a game , a tv show, a pdf file, and ebook online.

It's not piracy , it's logical thinking.

Yes...I'm an OTAKU!
Even though I use some Japanese words in saying something or posting something I can't say that I'm a Weeaboo because I'm not that obsessed with the Japanese thing or culture just but I do like Japan XD
I just saying Japanese words just for the sake of others who are talking like Weeaboos...fufufufu XD
BUT I"M NOT LIKE THAT!!!!
CERTIFIED OTAKU ♥

Didn't you see his post. He wasted all his money, in qoute.

If you don't think that is stupid, go eat a grenade.

Why buy DVDs when you can download or stream it for free ?

If I have the money, i'd rather not spend it on something i can get for free. Rather, I'd buy a rocket launcher.

Support the industry my ass

using your logic, I can probably say the same about another crime. Say, stealing money? It's not like someone stole from every bank in the world. So what? It's okay to steal because he's not stealing from all the banks? A crime is a crime.

You can sugar coat it however you want, the fact is it's still piracy. Hide it under logical thinking if you want, it's still piracy.

I'm not saying I never downloaded something. But that doesn't mean I'm not fully aware of what I'm doing. And I'd be more envious of a person who bought the stuff original and all that I only downloaded online.

If you like drowning yourself in your downloads, be my guest. I'm just telling you it's still piracy.

Hippocratic self contradicting idiot. You've downloaded something yet you still call me unethical. I've never felt insulted in my entire life.

If they'd pay me a million dollars to kill someone with the protective measure that I can not be caught, I'll pull the trigger.

You are against everyone. Literally, everyone. You hate piracy and crime that much ?

With this Internet Speed, a 40g Yuyu Hakusho Blu Ray 1080p Dual - Audio torrent is a breeze.

Money spent on anime: $0

As long as those stupid Japanese and you "support the industry" faggots buy DVDs, the industry will live forever. And if the industry dies, I'll go to movies, comics, tv shows, and drama.

Yea, I hope you keep supporting the industry.
