Are You Sure that You're Really an Otaku?
Sun Feb 10, 2013 5:37 pm
Well, all of us here are fans of anime. Who does not like anime here anyway? No one. But have you ever asked yourself if you're really SO OBSESSED in anime? Do you consider yourself as an Otaku or are you the type of person that belongs to Weeaboos?
What is an Otaku? What is a Weeaboo? What are their differences?
Otaku is...a Japanese term used to refer to people with obsessive interests, particularly (but not limited to) anime and manga. The term otaku is most often equivalent to a "geek". However, it can relate to a fan of any particular theme, topic, hobby or any form of entertainment. The term otaku can be applied to both males and females. People who are referred to as otaku are judged for their behaviors and people suddenly see an otaku as a person unable to relate to reality. In Japan there has been some negativity towards otaku and its culture.based from Wikipedia
Weeaboo (a.k.a Wapanese) is...an English slang used to describe a person (typically of non-Japanese descent) who prefers Japan and all things in Japanese over one’s indigenous culture. The term is a successive mutation of “Wapanese,” a derogatory slur referring to western Japanophiles with a strong bias towards Japanese cultural and tech imports. Originally, it is an antecedent word “Wapanese” (as in Wannabe Japanese) and a 4chan term which devised from the word-filter, replacing every instance of Wapanese. Weeaboo was a fictitious term originally coined by Nicholas Gurewitch in his Perry Bible Fellowship comic strip.based from here
Difference betweeen an Otaku and a WeeabooEstablishing distinctions between Otaku and Weeaboo can be kinda confusing, as both subcultures subscribe to a common set of interests (ex: anime/manga/gaming/cosplay) and share the social stigma of nurturing "unhealthy hobbyisms."
Similarities:
- Spoiler:
- Weeaboo and Otaku: Like Anime
- Weeaboo and Otaku: Cosplay/Go to Anime Conventions
- Weeaboo and Otaku: Have Figurines or Toys
- Weeaboo and Otaku: Make fan arts
Diffrences:
- Spoiler:
- Weeaboo: Say random Japanese words
- Weeaboo: Will try to look/act Japanese
- Weeaboo: Make up a Japanese sounding name for themselves
- Weeaboo: Think they know how to read/write Japanese
- Weeaboo: Wear strange clothes in public
- Weeaboo: Will buy Japanese treats online or at stores (especially Pocky)
- Weeaboo: Like to show off how stupid they look
- Spoiler:
- Otaku: Waste money on loads of anime stuff
- Otaku: Spending most of their time watching anime, gaming, and reading manga (Almost NO TIME to go outside their house and hanging out with their IRL friends)
- Otaku: Are often perverts
- Otaku: Like to keep things anime themed (such as avatars, signatures and desktop BGs)
- Otaku: Mainly dress cosplay
- Otaku: Will make user names related to what they like (Example: HaruhiFan123)
- Otaku: Have loads of anime on their hard drives
- Otaku: Like to discuss about their favorite animes/shows
- Otaku: Make AMV's and MAD's
based from here
So there you have it. You know now what an otaku and a weeaboo is. Features of weeaboo overlaps those of an otaku or at least, the popular interpretation for otaku. The reason why is simple: every weeaboo is an otaku, BUT not every otaku is a Weeaboo. Mind blown yet? Well, it’s not exactly easy to tell them apart. :P
Are you an Otaku or a Weeaboo?

I know what an Otaku is...and yes I am...and here's my proof I buy anime dvd's, manga, japanese video games and sometime figurines...there are certain situations that I became distant with friends (but not relatives) because of anime....these are my signs of a authentic japanese otaku...

I'm not an Otaku, I simply watch anime and read manga and that's it,I would prefer to call myself as an anime enthusiast rather than Otaku , I also watch a lot of Hollywood movies, in fact I only have 75 gig of anime series collection compared it to my 450 gig movie collection, it's nothing.

That's stupid.
The reason I got into anime is because it's free. I can torrent it.
I'd never buy DVDs , figurines, posters, and manga. It's expensive.
If I have the money, I'd go for a better hobby than anime. Like Heroin.

The hardest part of being an otaku here in the philippines is not about the money...is how can you buy them and WHERE can you buy the stuff...comic alley (philippines) is not enough for me they only sell stuff...I buy dvd's and Special edition stuff though internet and it's hard...really..I Just wish there are more anime stores here in the philippines...I'm willing to spend lots and lots for my one and only love ANIME....and for games it's no problem with me since...there's datablitz...

Otaku definitely... but i think bragging to others that you're an otaku make your self a weeaboo i mean you should be prod of it but not exaggerate it.

everyday I'm watching animes, playing online/console games, reading mangas, buying anime stuffs (not everyday lol), spacing out while fantasizing my shipped pairings and.. well ehem..:P but I'm not considering myself as an otaku, imo if you love anime or game or whatever it is it's already enough, ofc I want to be called an otaku too but my xp isn't enough to lvl up and acquire that prestigious title. I gotta admit I became a weaboo, a self-proclaimed otaku and putting -desu on every words I say (during my highschool days), and as time passes I realized how pretty darn annoying I was haha

I think i have some traits of a weeaboo according to the list i have 2 out of 7 that makes almost 28.6 % while 7 out of 9 that is 77.8% traits of an otaku. Does this makes me an otaku? I think i am XD

These are other points on how to differentiate Otakus from Weaboos:
I saw this in Facebook. But I guess the one who made this is a Weaboo. -_-

I know that each of us have our own ways of helping the industry but please do not insult the others who support the industry directly.
I agree though that buying anime goods doesn't mean that you are a greater Otaku/anime lover/whatever you want to call yourself compared to the others.
You should just support the industry any way you can but please respect others who are supporting the same industry but through different methods.
