Additional:
"I" has many variations. The most common and most formal way is "watashi".
and here are some informal ways:
atashi = commonly use by girls
jibun, boku (as far as I know boku is for boys, but sometimes I hear girls using it)
"ore" - manly way of saying "I"
For the subject "YOU"
We can use "Anata" which is the formal way and also "kimi", while "omae" is the informal or rude way.
----
We can use also "doumo" instead of "arigatou" to show our appreciation or by saying thanks.
We can also use "sumimasen". And sometimes we can respond "kamai naku" (if I'm not wrong) which means "No problem"
SUMIMASEN has many variations. It can be THANKS, SORRY, or EXCUSE ME.
Thanks - you're saying thank you but somehow saying sorry because you caused trouble
.. and same goes for "sorry" and "excuse me" too
And the one you posted "shitsurei shimasu"
-although it means "excuse me" I believe it is used for business/transactions not just like the "sumimasen" that can be used anytime (if I'm not mistaken)

As far as I know there are 2500 kanjis that was introduced that contains symbols that are oftenly used in our daily lives
1900 kanji (kyouiku kanji) are teached in schools
-- 1st grade (80 kanjis)
-- 2nd grade (160 kanjis)
-- 3rd grade (200 kanjis)
-- and so on and so fort (*felt lazy)
Their goal: learn 2500 kanji after junior highschool
and the remaining 500-600 kanjis are used in names (jinmeiyou kanji)
But in Japan, if you are going to read "medical journals", you must know approximately 6000 kanji .......
IF I WERE NOT MISTAKEN
<--- can only read and write only 200 kanji .......

This is totally useful. Helped me survive my Japanese class. Too bad am still unqualified for the JLPT. Stopped learning last year. My brain can only handle European Languages.
