Anime History in the Philippines
Sun Feb 17, 2013 10:42 am
I made some research about the start of anime in the Philippines and here i got.
It was in 70′s when the first animated series introduce in the country. Anime robot “Gigantor” a american version of “Tetsujin 28-go” is one of the very first anime in Black and White TV. Take note only the creator is Japanese but the anime (cartoon’s) is toned in american viewer. By this time people don’t even know that they are watching “anime“.
Gigantor in Black in White TV "Try to imagine your favorite anime is in Black in White (^_^)
Gigantor set-off the stage for Robot invasion. It was followed by “Mazinger Z“, “Daimos” (at that time the most popular TV anime) “Voltes V” (but this series didn’t end well due to cancellation).
The 80′s is the comeback of western cartoons (anime but to avoid confusion about the two I use cartoon) Thundercats, Transformers (Tranformer production has a Filipino artist involved named: Floro Dery) and G.I. Joe these were also influence by Japanese animation.
Due to the flow of story of this anime; freedom fighter, family affairs and lots of moral lesson people get hooked by this type of series. It might be the reason why they get cancellation. So we can say that anime also has a contribution in freedom restoration in the country? Hmm?
We can conclude that the first anime genre is “Mecha“.
After the martial law, many new anime has finally aired; “Dragon Ball Z” , to “Battle Ball Soccer” to “Macross“, “Time Quest” and other’s. Anime dedicated for kids also have the opportunity to be aired like “Ron Ron the Flower Girl“, “Candy Candy” etc. As westernized titles (novel to be exact) also adopted into anime like “Cedie“, “Heidi” and “Princess Sarah” who missed them?
Dragon Ball one of the successful anime in the Philippines
RPN-9 “Dragon Ball Z“, “Sailormoon” from ABC -5, “Yu Yu Hakusho” (Known as “Ghost Fighter“) on GMA7, “Ranma 1/2” and “Slam Dunk“, “Doraemon".ABS-CBN “Neon Genesis Evangelion“, “Akazukin Cha-Cha”, “Magic Knight Rayearth”, and “Cardcaptor Sakura” (But this station know for cutting the opening ang ending credits of this anime no particular reason maybe because it was Japanese text.). At this time tagalog dub anime introduce (above anime is dub in English be aware). But due to some changes some other television anime cancel or cut for some of their anime series. RPN-9 and IBC-13 were cut a few episodes short of the entire series.

2000′s is the time when people acknowledge this work as an anime. Local anime fan organize a convention “AnimeXplosion” with Animation Council of the Philippines. They first year of this convention their special guest a popular comic artist, Ms. Yuu Watase creator of “Fushigi Yuugi” which is a hit Anime TV series that time. The pop culture of Japanese invade us and we Pinoy also adopt from they like cosplay-ing and other stuff. A lot of other things had happened after this so-called Anime Revolution in this country. Now, they may be good or bad, but one thing is for sure… they all started somewhere.

anime started in 1926 so cartoons is just an american version of anime , still don't know why they want to fight so bad that anime is first than cartoon.
